Choosing Residential Window Blinds
There are two major questions you need to answer when choosing blinds:
1) What do I want the house to look like from the outside?
2) What do I want each room to look like from the inside?
Once you have a general game plan then you need to look at each room individually. Below we have compiled a list of the major rooms in any home and some basic recommendations as to which types of blinds may be appropriate.
Kitchen:
Many modern kitchens are connected to other rooms in the home. Sometimes in order to set this pivotal room apart from the rest of the house people will choose a different window covering to accentuate this most important room in your house. Windows by a sink should be easy to clean. Wood, faux wood, and aluminum blinds are the easiest to clean. Blinds that have smooth painted finishes, as opposed to rough, textured finishes are the easiest to clean.
Master Bedroom:
Most of our clients insist on privacy in their bedrooms. Wood, faux wood, and aluminum blinds provide ample privacy. If you are looking for the ability to block out all light, you should consider shutters, honeycomb shades, or roller shades.
Master Bath:
Humidity doesn’t ordinarily adversely affect any quality window treatments, even wood blinds. However, if the window treatment gets direct water pressure, vinyl is best. For additional privacy, consider those blinds without route holes or shutters. If you’re using vertical blinds, then consider the inherent approximately 1/2" gap below the vertical vanes near the sill, and determine if that is enough privacy for you-especially if the window is near your bath tub.
Nursery:
The major concern in any nursery is for the child’s safety. Make sure your window treatment has the latest safety features, and that cords are not near cribs. Also be sure that if you get vinyl mini blinds that they are not the ones with hazardous lead. Darkening the room is usually a common goal, so blackout shades are perfect.
Media Room:
Blackout shades are the most popular choice for this room. You can choose from honeycomb shades to roller shades. Some can even be made with side rails to eliminate all light. A shade, which does not allow light to pierce through the route holes, should be selected to ensure the best look.
Study:
Most of these rooms have wood floors, furniture, or bookcases. In order to keep with the elegance of this home office, wood blinds or shutters that match the colors in the room are normally the best choice.
